The Characteristics of the Six Transcendences

Generosity

Generosity loosens the grip of avarice.

for one who sees the emptiness of giver, gift, and receiver
gives freely and without fear.
It grants beings whatever they truly need,
and through this giving it draws them, guides them,
and places them within the vehicle suited to their destiny.

Morality

Morality removes the impulses of harm.
It functions with the quiet clarity of nonconceptual intuition,
since ethical purity steadies the mind for direct seeing.
It brings safety and trust to others,
fulfilling their needs through restraint of body and speech.
It attracts beings into virtue
and carries them into the level of training appropriate for their unfolding.

Tolerance

Tolerance dissolves anger at its roots.
It flows together with nonconceptual intuition,
for one who sees the emptiness of harm cannot be provoked.
It comforts others by absorbing injury without retaliation.
It softens hostile hearts, settles their turmoil,
and leads them toward a deeper readiness for the path.

Effort

Effort breaks through the weight of laziness.
It moves with nonconceptual intuition,
for true effort is unburdened by self-importance.
It uplifts others, supports their progress,
and continually strengthens the growth of virtue.
It inspires beings to rise, to try again,
and to enter the training their own karma calls them toward.

Contemplation

Contemplation ends the scattering of the mind.
It lives side by side with nonconceptual intuition,
for deep serenity uncovers the nature of mind directly.
Its presence gladdens others through steadiness and peace.
It draws beings into stillness,
reveals the workings of their own awareness,
and prepares them for the vehicle that suits their capacity.

Wisdom

Wisdom dissolves false seeing.
It arises as nonconceptual intuition itself —
the clear vision that cuts through confusion without struggle.
It removes doubts, clarifies reality,
and offers beings the understanding that leads them onward.
It places them in the correct vehicle
by revealing precisely what they are ready to comprehend.
